Our Jimmy

Thank goodness Northern Ireland can laugh at itself and that's what James young did, he helped Ulster laugh at ourselves. Characters such as Orange Lily, Derek and the Cherryvalley Lady and others reminded us of people we all knew. Characters that made us all special.

Many of us to this day watch his BBC videos and DVD's when we want to remember how things once were, how far we've come or just for a bit of nostalgia.

Although Jimmy Young passed away on the 5th July 1974 he is very much remembered and mimicked to this day, nearly 40 years later. With a career spanning three decades he helped Ulster through some of the worst times and had many catch phrase including 'stop fightin!'

James Young was born in 1918, in Union Street, Ballymoney and was one of four children.

In 1974 he passed on after suffering a massive heart attack behind the wheel of his car. His coffin was taken from his Ballyhalbert home, along the Newtownards Road in East Belfast where he had previously lived, passed the Group Theatre in Bedford Street, passed BBC Broadcasting House and continued along a planned route up to Roselawn Cemetery.
